In the 17th century Edo Period, the sashiko stitching techniques were developed in the rural north of Japan, where cotton threads were woven into linen fabrics to reinforce them and keep their wearers warm.

Since then, sashiko has transformed from a mere functional device into iconic Japanese embellishments on many fashion garments.

Drawing inspiration from the sashiko technique, the stitches made into vegetable-tanned Italian suede leather, strengthening, and at the same time augmenting the aesthetic of the humble material.

In this Bifold Wallet of about half a quarter square-foot of leather, there are no less than six hundred stitches painstakingly made by hand, and taking up to 20 hours to complete.

It pays tribute to sashiko stitches' humble beginnings and is a testimony of the dedication of the artisans that created them.
